About this experience

Want to put a name on a knitted item like a Christmas stocking or add a cute and colorful motif to a hat or other knitted item without having to use intarsia or stranded colorwork? Duplicate stitch lets you add lettering and designs to finished knitting by stitching over the existing knit stitches with another color of yarn. We’ll learn how it works and how to use it to personalize your knits for the holidays and beyond. We’ll also talk about changing names on existing stockings, a handy skill to have if you or someone you know has a beloved stocking that needs a name change. Bring your own knitted item, a tapestry needle, and yarn for duplicate stitching, or purchase a duplicate stitch class kit from the store.

Supplies needed if you are bringing your own knitted item:

  • An item knitted in stockinette stitch.
  • Yarn for duplicate stitching in one or more colors. Choose yarn the same weight as the knitted item, or slightly thicker for better coverage. Ideally, choose the same fiber, especially if the item will need washing.
  • A tapestry needle.
