Putting the Spindle Whorl Before the Cart

What if the invention of the wheel was also the invention of the spindle whorl, used for making cordage and thread? Rounded weights with holes through their centers have been found throughout the world at many ancient archaeological sites. Perhaps not all of them were spindle whorls. Some may have served as flywheels for simple hand drills, ornaments, fishing weights, or other purposes. But when these objects are considered in the context of where they were found and what was found alongside them, many were almost certainly used for spinning. The earliest wheeled carts found to date are only from around 3500-3350 BCE, while the oldest spindle whorls could be at least 12,000 years old. Spindle whorls could easily be among the oldest wheel-based technologies in the world.
Spinning does not necessarily require a tool, and a spindle does not necessarily need a whorl. Cordage can be spun by twisting fibers along your thigh or between your hands. A simple wooden stick can also be used to twist fibers into cord or thread by rolling or spinning it. Adding a whorl, however, changes the way a spindle works. The weight of a whorl stores rotational energy and helps the spindle continue spinning longer when released, while the width and size of the whorl affect the speed and duration of the spin. A small, light whorl can rotate quickly and make fine thread, while a heavier whorl turns more slowly but can spin longer. Whorl technology made the production of cordage and thread faster and more consistent.
Based on archaeological evidence, it can be difficult to know just how long humans have been twisting plant or animal fibers into cordage. The biodegradable nature of ancient cordage means that its preservation to the present day would have been unlikely. And yet, traces of ancient cordage have somehow survived into humanity’s present. Archaeologists excavating the Abri du Maras rock shelter in France found a stone flake that had microscopic remains of a piece of cord. When examined, it was found that each strand of the three-ply cord had been twisted in one direction, and the three strands were then plied together in the opposite direction. How old was this tiny piece of the oldest three-ply cord in the world? Between 41,000 and 52,000 years old. And who knows how ancient this knowledge already was before a cord maker tens of thousands of years ago left a fragment of their cord on a sharp piece of stone.
At the Dzudzuana Cave excavation in Georgia, hundreds of microscopic plant fibers have been recovered, and some even show evidence of having been dyed: between 26,000 and 32,000 years old. At the Gravettian sites in the Czech Republic, researchers found impressions of cordage that had been used to decorate fired clay: between 26,000 and 28,000 years old. These are only a few examples of early cordage traces that have been found. However, the earliest possible spindle whorls that have been discovered date to only about 12,000 years ago. These were small stones with holes through them found at the Nahal Ein Gev II excavation in Israel. There are some questions about whether they were definitively used for spinning, but recent research shows that such a use was at least feasible.
There is a hidden history in the many thousands of years between the earliest surviving cordage and the first easily recognizable spindle whorls. At La Marmotta in Italy, definitive evidence of spinning using spindle whorls becomes clearer. Dating to around 5800–5400 BCE, several spindles were found at the site, including one with thread still wrapped around it, and spindle whorls as well. In Ashalim Cave in Israel, a stick fitted with a lead whorl that could have been used for spinning has been dated to 4500–4000 BCE. These are only a few surviving examples of early spindle whorls. Is it possible that spinning with spindle whorls occurred even earlier than our available evidence suggests? Absolutely. If the earliest possible spindle whorls we have found are 12,000 years old, older ones may simply not have been found yet. It is equally possible that earlier spindle whorls were made of wood, unfired clay, or other easily degradable materials and simply have not survived the ages. We will likely never know just how old spinning with spindle whorls actually is. The best we can do is try to find the oldest surviving examples.
The first ancestors of Indigenous North and South Americans are thought to have arrived from Siberia between 19,000 and 26,000 years ago. Whether they brought spindle-whorl spinning technology with them is unknown, but current archaeological evidence suggests that spindle whorls may have developed independently in North and South America, later than in Europe and Western Asia. To date, the earliest possible spindle whorls found in the Americas may come from Peru and could date to 3000–1800 BCE. One was a barrel-shaped, bead-like whorl found with a stick still inserted through it. At the archaeological site known as Asia, Unit 1, other round and oval whorls were also found, made from materials such as large seeds and wood. In Mesoamerica, objects initially described as greenstone beads may also have been used as spindle whorls and date to 1500–800 BCE. Throughout North America, spindle whorls have been found dating from around 900 CE or later.
The spindle whorls found in different regions do not all look the same, and it is that variation that makes them so interesting. At Nahal Ein Gev II, the possible whorls were small stones with centered holes. In Peru, at Asia, Unit 1, one stone whorl was barrel-shaped and decorated, while others were made from seeds and other materials. In Mesoamerica, the whorls were more like thick beads and were made from valuable greenstone. These differences show that spindle whorls were not based on one fixed design, but on a mechanical idea that could be adapted to different materials, fibers, and spinning traditions. While we do not know whether spindle whorls were invented independently in every region or how much knowledge was passed between neighboring communities, we do know that people around the world found remarkably similar ways to make a spindle turn longer and more steadily.
Twisted cordage, thread, and spindles were invented long before spindle whorls. But adding a round weight to a spindle transformed an ancient technique by helping the spindle turn longer and more steadily, as well as increasing the speed at which fibers could be spun. Archaeological evidence suggests that one of humanity’s oldest wheels may not have carried a cart or turned a mill, but instead was attached to a spindle, turning fiber into thread. Many of these early fiber tools have disappeared, and the people who used them left behind only fragments of their work. But spindle spinning never became merely a part of our history. Quechua and Aymara spinners in the Andes, herders in Mongolia, traditional spinners in many other communities, and the person using a drop spindle at your local yarn shop are all working with the same basic principle and are inheritors of an ancient craft. The materials, shapes, and traditions may differ, but the spindle whorl is still spinning.
